RushClan | Eastern Territory: The Open Moors

The moorlands stretch right to the edges of RushClan’s territory, ending in a rather jagged set of cliffs that a few cats have fallen down and never returned from. The land is rather dusty and littered with small hollows of collapsed rabbit warrens, and the apprentices learn to feel the ground with their paws to make sure they won’t accidentally cause a cave-in. Again, rabbits are the most common prey, but in the warmer moons sometimes pheasants are around, though it takes a little more skill to be able to catch them.

Jadescorch padded slowly along the moors, testing the ground with her paws before putting her full weight onto it. She scented the air, closing her eyes and flattening her ears.

Brambledusk followed, tail waving, and glanced at Windpaw. "Keep up!" he teased the apprentice.

Windpaw raced towards his mentor, enjoying the feel of the wind in his fur. “I am!” He said, looking at his mentor as he slows down.

Jadescorch chuckled, shaking her head at the two. She lifted her head once more, closing her eyes and simply enjoying the wind. "Can you scent anything, Windpaw?"

Brambledusk sneezed as a flake landed on his nose, his tail fluffing suddenly.

IC: Jadescorch didn't wait much longer for an answer before she padded forward, skirting around the areas of the ground that were more likely to collapse.

ic: "Windpaw?" Brambledusk looked back for the apprentice, realising the snow was getting thicker by the second.

Windpaw, who’s mind had been far away to where he could see, snapped to attention and looked up, his eyes wide. “Oh.. uhh.” He quickly scents the air, his nose wrinkling. “I can scent rabbits, however it’s faint, so they would be in their burrows, however there are fresher scents near. The snow seems to cover the scents, I’ve never seen it happen.” He muttered the last part.

Jadescorch nodded upon hearing the apprentice, pride over how well her mate was teaching him being the main thing she felt. She twitched her ears. "Be careful on the ground. Some parts crumble," she meowed as she lowered into a crouch.

Brambledusk padded back over to the apprentice. "See, the thing about snow is that it looks light and fluffy, but it's actually tiny bits of ice. It's the same as when it rains," he waved his tail, then scraped the snow away to expose the bare ground again. "We might need to dig out some prey."

Windpaw looked at the ground and swiped at the snow, revealing the bare earth. “I thought the snow was thicker then that.”

"It's still fluffy. It'll thicken when it freezes more." Jadescorch replied evenly, padding carefully along the ground while she listened out for sounds beneath her. Her ear twitched and she unsheathed her claws, swiping away the snow. "There are some muffled steps beneath here. We'll have to find an entrance or dig to get them out," she mewed, already swiping at the dirt with her claws.

Brambledusk dug his claws into the ground as a particularly large gust of wind almost knocked him over. "Jadescorch?" he called to them both, making his way over with squinting eyes as more snow was kicked up. "We're going to freeze out here if we don't hurry."

Jadescorch's tail twitched anxiously. They need to bring something back. "Right. I think there's two rabbits under here. Let's at least try and get them out. If it starts to take too long, we'll go. Sound good?" She glanced to her mate, flattening her ears.

Brambledusk nodded, taking a step and immediately sinking chin-deep into the snow as his paw found the entrance. "They're snowed in!" he managed to mew without taking a mouthful.

Jadescorch turned and trotted to her mate, grabbing his scruff to pull him back. "Should we dig through here to get them? The dirt is already cold and hard to dig through."

Brambledusk shook his head, ears flicking. “We need to get back to camp. StarClan knows who else is out, they shouldn’t be worrying about us.”

Windpaw shivers, moving his paws on the ground to calm himself and keep him warm as he carefully continues moving. “But we haven’t gotten any prey yet? Wouldn’t Spiderstar be angry?”

"I think she'd be angrier if we didn't come back at all." Jadescorch waved her tail and sighed. "They'll still be there when the storm stops. We'll come back then," she meowed and started to lead the way back.

Windpaw shivered as he walked along behind Jadescorch, his eyes narrowed as he sighed. "When will the snow go away?" He asked.

Brambledusk pressed up against his apprentice, letting his body split the rush of snow and air to protect the tiny cat. "When newleaf comes. You'll know," he purred, leading the way back to camp.
