A portion of the Green Lakes hidden by a section of trees, where small streams and a shallow pool cross the sandy clearing. A good place for hunting and swimming as it is well protected, but quite a small area, with sandy spots for practicing land fighting.

Russethawk flicked his ears and looked at the clearing as snow settled atop the sandy ground, huffing slightly. "Well, looks like we might need to work on your balance a little more," he glanced at Wolfpaw, purring at the white speckles decorating the apprentice's pelt.

Wolfpaw ducked his head sheepishly and smiled. "Maybe, yeah. I'm a little easily startled." He padded forward, wrinkling his nose at the cold of the snow.

Russethawk nodded, diving forward and knocking Wolfpaw's forepaws out from under him.

Wolfpaw slumped down with his face in the snow. He leaped back up quickly, snow stuck to his whiskers, and his eyes wide. Quite messily, he leaped back at Russethawk.

Russethawk twisted away at the last moment, shoving the apprentice's backside and knocking him off balance again. "Come on, you did better two sunrises ago!"

That time, Wolfpaw had been prepared and planted his back paws to catch himself, launching back toward his mentor a mere second later. He swatted at the older tom's legs.

Russethawk stood back, a little surprised, then twitched his whiskers as an idea occurred to him. He flicked his tail across the ground, sending a shower of fresh snow into Wolfpaw's eyes, then charged him from the side.

Wolfpaw barreled over into a soft pile of snow with a surprised squeak. He rose shakily to his paws, blinking the remaining snow out of his eyes and whirling to face Russethawk. He tried to think back to what some of the older apprentices had mentioned about balance, but quickly forgot and simply leaped back at his mentor.

Russethawk purred, letting the apprentice pin him down and simply looking up at the tom. "I admire your enthusiasm, Wolfpaw."

Wolfpaw flicked his ears back sheepishly and moved off of his mentor, sitting down in the snow. "You do?"

Russethawk nodded, standing and shaking the snow off with a shiver from nose to tail. "You attacked a warrior bigger than yourself. Surprise is a good thing to have on your side."

If Wolfpaw could've blushed, he would've. "I was upset about losing my balance before. I wanted to try and show you I'm more than just a cat who falls on his face a lot," he mewed and swished his tail.

Russethawk purred. "Well, you did. But if you'd have chosen to do that to an enemy Clan cat, you'd be toast," he teased softly, sitting down. "RippleClan cats like to fight in pairs and groups, but we have to learn to defend ourselves on our own. What sort of things do you think you could do if there were three of me trying to fight you?"

"Dodge and try to pick them off? I don't think I'd be able to do more than disorient them, but even a few seconds gives me time to get away if you're an enemy." Wolfpaw mewed nervously, trying to make sure to say the most logical things.

"The ability to go into the water, right?" Wolfpaw flattened his ears. "So I'd just need to go to the water?"

Russethawk shrugged. "Most of our territory has water on it. If you're in a defensive mode, water is your best bet. "

Wolfpaw nodded, repeating the information under his breath so he'd remember it. He moved to his paws again. "But if I'm in an area with less water, I should try to disorient and escape, right?" He sounded nervous, hoping he was right.

"Very good," Russethawk purred again and without prompting, leaped at the apprentice again.

Wolfpaw squeaked and fell backward in alarm, kicking his hind legs up at the warrior.

Russethawk's whiskers twitched and let the apprentice batter his belly. "What did I just teach you?"

"To try and escape, but it's still worth it to know how to fight in case I can't," Wolfpaw mewed defensively and wriggled out from beneath the tom.

Russethawk sighed and stepped back, off the apprentice. "You escape or you die. I could've easily killed you." He flicked his tail. "Something seems...off to me. I wouldn't have insisted we battle trained otherwise."

Wolfpaw's eyes widened in alarm. He glanced around, slipping closer to Russethawk. "What do you mean by off? Is there something nearby?" He mewed, slinking to crouch further into the snow.

Russethawk shook his head. "It's truly nothing. I'm just...paranoid." He nudged the apprentice just as another gust of wind blew a fresh flurry through the clearing. "And I think we should probably head back to camp before we freeze solid."

"Yeah, good idea. I'd rather not die to the snow." Wolfpaw shook the flakes off his fur, trotting ahead of his mentor.
