PathClan :: The Underground Lake

A stream from the RippleClan territory above dumps water into a large, greenish pond below. This lake is populated by various cave dwelling amphibians as well as a small fish. The water is not safe to be drunk or even touched, but the prey are safe to eat and, according to elder's tales, eating fish allows you to wade safely through the water.

Ashfall padded into the cavern, ears attuned to the rushing water above.

Palepaw trotted after the tom, Tempestpaw hot on his heels. He rolled his eyes at her excited nature.

Ashfall flicked his tail and motioned to a large salamander resting on the flat stone at the lake's edge.

Palepaw blinked owlishly and slipped into a crouch, creeping forward slowly. However, he ended up being too slow as his sister darted past and leaped onto the salamander. The tabby sheathed her claws into the animal's neck and bit down on it. Her brother glared at her, embarrassed about having been shown up.

Tempestpaw looked up at Ashfall and her brother, puffing out her chest while she gripped the salamander in her jaws.

Ashfall shot a sympathetic look at Palepaw, then purred a congratulations to Tempestpaw. The noise from the hunt had caused the other salamanders to slip back into the murky green water. A frog cautiously crawled from its hiding place in the stones and began bellowing.

Tempestpaw nudged her brother towards the frog with a purr of encouragement. She sat back by Ashfall, watching as Palepaw crept along the floor. She beamed with pride when her brother pounced and killed the animal. "Yay, Palepaw!" The tabby bounced in place, darting over to her brother and nuzzling him.

Palepaw attempted to shrug off his sister in disgust, but a closer look would show he appreciated the show of pride.

Ashfall shot a smile at the young apprentice then clambered onto a boulder in the shallows where giant tadpoles swarmed to suck at the moss. A fish darted at them, causing them to scatter in every direction, some springing from the water. Quick as lighting, Ashfall snatched one of the tadpoles from the water and trotted back to the apprentices, the tadpole squirming in his jaws.

Tempestpaw and Palepaw had watched with wide eyes. The more energetic of the two was first to speak. "Lupinfrost hasn't showed me how to do that yet! Palepaw, I'm so jealous!" She bounced around and purred.

"It's rather hard to pull off," Ashfall mewed, "You have to be careful not to get splashed when they jump."

Palepaw looked sheepish in response to his sister's excitement. "Can you teach us?" He mewed shyly to his mentor, Tempestpaw pausing when he said us rather than just himself. The tabby beamed and purred loudly.

Ashfall nodded, leading the apprentices to a mossy stone overhanging the lake where tadpoles crowded to feed.

The two pushed their prey aside and clambered after the warrior, hopping carefully onto the mossy rocks.

Ashfall held his tail up, signaling the apprentices to wait. Under the gigantic squirming tadpoles shadows lurked, the tadpoles nervously scattering if any got too close but none quite reaching the surface.

Tempestpaw inched slightly closer, pausing when she heard her brother's worried hiss. She stepped back again, peering into the water with wide eyes, Palepaw doing the same beside her.

Ashfall flicked his tail over the water. From under the water a fish darted to the surface and tadpoles scattered, several springing from the water to escape.

Tempestpaw's eyes widened and she swatted at a tadpole that had leaped from the water, only to hiss when she missed it. Her ears flattened. "Dang it," she grumbled, perking up a little when Palepaw nudged her shoulder in reassurance.

"It's alright, it takes a while to get the hang of." Ashfall mewed, "I don't even know if most warriors can pull it off."
